Take attendance

This article helps you mark attendance for a class meeting and fix a mark later.

Before you start

  • You must be a teacher (or caregiver) for the class, and children must be enrolled.
  • You can mark any day from the start of the semester (or session) up to today. Future days can't be marked.

Mark attendance

  1. Open the class from My classes and click Take attendance. (Today also shows a Take attendance button when a recent class has none saved.)
  2. Check the date. Use the arrows (Previous meeting, Next meeting) or the date picker to change it.
  3. For each child, click Present, Absent or Excused. Click a mark again to clear it.
  4. To mark everyone left, click Mark remaining present.
  5. To add a note, click Add note next to the child, for example "Left early, doctor's appointment".
  6. Click Complete attendance when every child has a mark. Not finished? Click Save draft to keep what you have.

Fix a mistake

  1. Open the class's Attendance tab and choose History.
  2. Click the child's mark for that day, change it or the note, and click Save.
  3. Or open Take attendance on that date. It says This day is already marked. Changes replace the saved marks. Make your changes and save again.
  4. Marked the wrong day? Open Take attendance on that date, click Clear this day, then Clear marks. The day goes back to not taken, and its notes are removed too.

What happens next

You see a message with the day's counts. The History view shows every meeting for the semester. Excused days don't count against a child's attendance rate. If your director turned on attendance emails, the family gets an email when you mark their child absent or excused.

Common problems

  • Complete attendance is greyed out? Some children still need a mark. The line next to the buttons says how many students still need a status.
  • A child is missing from the list? They may not be enrolled yet. Check the Roster tab, or ask your director.
  • Can't change an old mark? The child has left the class, so that mark is locked.
  • Leaving the page with unsaved marks? You are asked first, so you don't lose them.
  • Can't teach on a class day? Click I can't make it to tell your director in Messages.
