Fees and payment timing

This article explains every fee on a family payment and how long money takes to reach your bank.
What families pay
Families always pay exactly the invoice total. No fee is ever added for the family, whether they pay by bank or card.
What comes out of your payout
Two fees come out of each online payment before it reaches you:
- Platform fee: a percent of the payment, set by your plan (table below). During the free trial it is 0.5%.
- Stripe processing fee, passed through with no markup: bank (ACH) payments 0.8%, capped at $5.00; card payments 2.9% plus $0.30.
Cash, check and other payments you record yourself have no fees.
Examples on the Grow plan
- $200 by bank: platform fee $1.00, Stripe $1.60. You get $197.40.
- $200 by card: platform fee $1.00, Stripe $6.10. You get $192.90.
- $1,000 by bank: platform fee $5.00, Stripe $5.00 (the cap). You get $990.00.
When the money arrives
- Bank payments take 3 to 5 business days to clear.
- Card payments clear right away.
- After a payment clears, Stripe sends it to your bank on its payout schedule.
- The first payout after connecting Stripe usually takes 7 to 14 days.
Refunds and returns
- When you refund a payment in full or in part, the platform fee comes back to you in proportion to the amount refunded. Stripe keeps its processing fee.
- If a family's bank returns a payment, the amount and any related fees come out of your payout balance.
Where to see it
Go to Finances → Payments. Each payment shows the fee and your net. Fees marked ~ are estimates until the payment settles. Received means the money is in your Stripe balance. The owner can click Payouts to see deposits to your bank.
Common problems
- A payment says Clearing? It's a bank payment that hasn't cleared yet.
- Your first payout hasn't arrived? It usually takes 7 to 14 days. Check Payouts for Stripe's schedule.
