Assignments and grading

This article shows you how to turn on assignments and grades, post and grade work, and choose how grades show to families.

Plan: Grow and Thrive.

Before you start

  • Assignments & grades is on in Settings → Tools. It starts on for co-ops and micro-schools. Mother's Day Out and Parents Day Out programs usually leave it off.

Choose how grades show

  1. Go to Settings → Classes & grading → Grading.
  2. Under How grades show, pick Letter grades, Percent or Pass or not yet.
  3. Set your Cutoffs (or the one Cutoff for pass), check the Preview, and click Save grading.

Post an assignment

  1. Open the class from Classes and click the Assignments tab.
  2. Click New assignment. Add a title and, if you like, instructions, a link, Due (optional), Families see it on (optional) and Points (optional).
  3. Click Publish, or Save as draft. An assignment with a future "families see it" date shows as Scheduled.

Grade and return work

  1. On the assignment, click Open review (or Grade next to a student).
  2. Type the points, or EX for excused, and a comment.
  3. Click Save and next to keep the grade hidden, or Return now to show it to the family.
  4. To return every held grade at once, click Return all graded.

Weight categories

On the class Grades tab, click Grade settings. Under Category weights, use Add category (for example Homework 40, Tests 60) and click Save categories. With no weights, every point counts the same. Once you have weights, a new assignment starts in the heaviest category. Graded work with no category counts as "Other" and gets whatever weight is left over.

What happens next

  • Grades stay hidden from families until you return them. When you return one, the family sees the grade and feedback.
  • Teachers use the same tabs for their own classes.

Common problems

  • No Assignments or Grades tab? Turn on Assignments & grades in Tools, and check your plan.
  • Points over the total? That counts as extra credit.
  • Work with no category isn't changing the grade? Your weights already add up to 100, so nothing is left for "Other". Give that work a category.
  • Report cards
  • Post, grade and return assignments
  • Turn tools on and off, and what each plan includes
